The New Year will usher in a new era of energy efficiency and sustainability at Oshawa’s Lakeridge Health (LH), one of Ontario’s largest community hospitals serving 600,000 residents of the Durham Region.
In collaboration with hospital staff, Ecosystem will implement an innovative energy efficiency project to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs while modernizing critical equipment.
As part of this energy performance contract, all of the 25 energy conservation measures (ECMs) are self-financed—they will be paid for with the savings they generate.
Project highlights
- ECMs to be implemented at three hospitals: Lakeridge Health Oshawa, Port Perry and Bowmanville
- Anticipated annual greenhouse gas reduction: 3,425 tons of CO2
- Anticipated annual savings: $1.37 million
- Total avoided costs: $8.33 million
- Estimated project payback period: 7.4 years
Customized performance measures
Overall, the project’s 25 ECMs will reduce heating and cooling loads in the facilities, increase the operating efficiency of systems and prioritize lower cost energy. They will also incorporate renewal programs for poorly functioning assets and take advantage of available incentive programs.
Green technology solutions will include a combined heat and power (CHP) plant at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. This CHP will serve as an in-house source of electricity, fuelled by natural gas for clean energy generation. It will generate enough electricity to help reduce the hospital’s dependency on electrical utilities—all the wasted energy will be used to heat the hospital.
The detailed engineering study is currently underway, with construction set to begin in approximately one year’s time.
