Aligning priorities to enhance resiliency and patient care

Located 50 kilometers east of Toronto, Lakeridge Health (LH) provides care for 650,000 people through its five hospital sites. Ecosystem and LH partnered on a deep energy retrofit of four sites to renew the energy infrastructure, improve energy efficiency, and improve the quality of patient care.

At the LH Oshawa site, a new natural gas-fueled CHP plant was introduced as an efficient, in-house source of electricity and thermal energy. Solar photovoltaic panels installed at three sites also generate clean power that LH can sell back to the grid. Ecosystem’s close collaboration with LH’s internal teams was instrumental in delivering a strategic project design that aligned with LH’s operational priorities and financing criteria. Ecosystem also minimized patient impact through communications and decision-making with internal teams.

An agile engineering-construction approach allowed Ecosystem to fast-track the project timeline. By pre-purchasing equipment before performing the design, Lakeridge was able to meet aggressive incentive deadlines to help fund the replacement of their aging AHUs.

The project has increased operating efficiency, reduced heating and cooling loads, leveraged low-cost energy sources, and enhanced staff and patient comfort. The production of clean, renewable on-site energy improves operational resiliency and energy efficiency.
